Kernels 2015 Opening Day Roster
N/A
Apr. 6, 2015 4:17 pm
The Cedar Rapids Kernels arrived at Veterans Memorial Stadium from their spring training home in Fort Myers, Fla., promptly at 11:45 Monday morning.
That was exactly the time they were scheduled to make it. Let's hope that's a sign of good things to come.
The preliminary roster The Gazette provided Saturday turned out to be the opening-day roster, sans one minor subtraction. Ten players who saw time in Cedar Rapids last season are on it, including opening-night starting pitcher Mat Batts.
He will be joined in the starting rotation by 2014 Kernels Stephen Gonsalves, John Curtiss (who started a playoff game for C.R.), Felix Jorge and Jared Wilson. Position players who return are second baseman Jonatan Hinojosa and outfielders Zack Larson, Zack Granite, Max Murphy and Tanner English.
The rest of the starting pitching rotation still needs to be ironed out, but fellow possibilities are Michael Cederoth and Zach Tillery.
According to Manager Jake Mauer, the catching duties will be split between Jorge Fernandez and Brian Navarreto. First base will be split between Trey Vavra and Tyler Kuresa, with Hinojosa at second base, 2014 first-round draft pick Nick Gordon at shortstop, T.J. White at third base and a mix of Larson, Granite, Murphy and English patrolling the outfield.
