We are writing in support of your Nov. 17 editorial 'Somebody missed memo on postelection unity” and in response to Rep. Bobby Kaufmann's comments on grieving students and his ill-advised proposed legislative ‘buttercup' bill.
In general, mental health professionals describe grief as an emotional and behavioral response to significant loss. Grieved losses may include but aren't limited to the death of a family member, the loss of a job, of health, of home and country, and following the presidential election, the loss of a hoped-for future for women, ethnic minorities, immigrants, and refugees: in short, the loss of a dream for a better America.
When many people, including students, experience strong grief, they may be challenged to express and regulate the ensuing powerful emotions. Part of supporting them is giving them safe spaces to share with others their experience of sadness, fear, anger, anxiety, and despair; to realize that they are not crazy or 'hysterical” but going through a normal grieving process. Such a sharing, especially if facilitated by a trained counselor, can restore a sense of control and empower them to move forward into their lives. For students already struggling with severe depression, fear, and anxiety, such an opportunity relieves isolation and may even be lifesaving.
State legislators should continue to support and empower the student health services of any state university in offering effective, professional mental health care and safe, supportive activities for any students dealing with intense grief, whatever the cause.
