Bacon, Kathleen Rapp
Kathleen Rapp Bacon, 99, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of San Mateo, Calif., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Briarwood Health Care Center. Funeral services and burial will be held in San Mateo, Calif. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Staff Fund at Briarwood Health Care Center, 605 Greenwood Drive, Iowa City, IA 52246.
Kathleen was born on Aug. 1, 1914, in San Mateo, Calif., the daughter of William A. and Katherine (Foye) Rapp. On Sept. 24, 1938, Kathleen married John E. Bacon in Carmel Mission, Calif.
Kathleen was a woman with many talents and interests. Above all, she was devoted to her husband, her two sons, and her extended family. She was a gifted writer who contributed her writing skills to the numerous charitable, school, civic and church groups for which she volunteered, and she also published articles in magazines and newspapers. Other hobbies included reading, golf, bridge, needlepoint, sewing, entertaining friends and following her beloved San Francisco Giants, 49ers and the Stanford Cardinal. She had many close friends, including a core group from her college days who stayed in touch with one another throughout their lives. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University in 1934 and she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. Kaye moved to Iowa in 2002 to be closer to family. She loved her adopted home and especially enjoyed the changing seasons and the wonderful people she met, including those who helped her live independently for so long and those who cared for her lovingly at the end of her life.
Survivors include her two sons, John (Rosetta) Bacon of Flemington, N.J., and Robert (Dianne McBrien) of Iowa City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Alex Bacon and Kira Bacon, both of Flemington, N.J., Anna Silveira of Middletown, Conn., John (Michelle) Bacon of Iowa City, Iowa, and Kate (Ken) Ferris of New York, N.Y.; and five great-grandchildren, Jack, Joe, Bobby, James, and Bebe.
