Stark, DVM
James E. “Jim” Stark, DVM, 64, of Dubuque, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Dubuque. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2659 Kennedy Rd., Dubuque.
Jim was born December 22, 1945, in Waterloo, son of Donald and Marian (Sheumaker) Stark. He graduated from North Tama High School in 1964 and from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1970. On November 21, 1970, he married Linda Frazier in New Providence.
The couple moved to Dubuque in 1972 where Jim started his veterinary practice at Colonial Terrace Animal Hospital. Jim was an inexhaustible provider and advocate for people and animals alike. His clients at the clinic (both the two- and four-legged kind) held a very special place in his heart.
Jim was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder, deacon, choir and band member, and youth adviser and teacher. He was involved with business and civic organizations in Dubuque as well as several local and state veterinary organizations.
Jim was passionate about his family, his farm, and raising alpacas, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Jim valued education and loved to read and teach. Music was also very important to him and he played trombone with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Stark, of Dubuque; four children, Meeran (Darrell) Zemitis of Alexandria, Va., Jee Hoon Stark of New York City, Nathan (Julie) Stark and Evan Stark, both of Dubuque; three grandchildren, Ziola, Jack, and Trip Stark; a grandson, Hugh Zemitis, due to arrive in October; his sister, Jean McCarty, of North Liberty, Iowa; two nieces, Susan McCarty and Jenny Arnold (Mark); and a nephew, Marshall McCarty.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
