Kelley, Ellen A.
Ellen A. Kelley, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, by the Rev. Dennis Juhl. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Teahen Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 3:45 p.m. and a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also visit Saturday at the church after 9 a.m.
Ellen is survived by three daughters, Colleen Kelley of La Jolla, Calif., Kathy (Russ) Telecky of Cedar Rapids and Jo (Bruce) Simpson of Oswego, Ill.; two sons, Tim (Sharon) Kelley of St. Peters, Mo., and Larry Kelley (Clara Newberry) of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Toby Kelley, L.A. Kelley, Kyle (Meghann) Kelley, Jill Kelley (Ben) Parker, Kara Kelley, Kinsley Kelley, Casie Simpson (Chris) Casula, Shanna Simpson and Tara Simpson, and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe H. Kelley; siblings and their spouses, Paul (Frances) Lockwood, Jane (Marvin) Springer, John (Louise) Lockwood, Mary (Bernie) Nemmers, twin sister Elinor Lockwood; nephew, Richard C. Lockwood; and great-grandson, Devlin Kelley.
Ellen Ann was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Patrick (Pat) Henry Lockwood and Rose Christine (Luehrman) Lockwood. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1937. Ellen married Joseph H. Kelley on March 12, 1944, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. She worked for a number of years as an executive secretary. Ellen was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church and a charter member of St. Anne's Circle. She served as treasurer for the Iowa City Area Ostomates and was an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary.
Ellen took part in many sports, and especially enjoyed her tennis groups at Westfield Tennis Club. She was an excellent cook and seamstress, and delighted in creating things for those she loved. She could often be found in her flower garden. She had a fighting spirit and overcame many obstacles in making the most of life in her last years. She was much loved and an inspiration to many. She will be greatly missed.
A memorial fund has been established in Ellen's name.
