Estle, Catherine I. 'Kate'
Catherine I. “Kate” Estle, 87, of Riverside, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab in Coralville. Kate chose to be cremated. A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville, with the Rev. Walter Helms officiating. The family will greet friends Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, with a rosary recited at 4 p.m. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville or St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside for Mass offerings or to Iowa City Hospice.
Kate was born Sept. 19, 1922, in St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Michael and Mary (Vander Mey) Huss. After graduating from Mechanic Arts High School in St. Paul, she worked as a proofreader for West Publishing in St. Paul. She married Leroy W. “Nick” Estle on Oct. 26, 1946, in St. Paul. The couple moved to the Iowa City area in 1962 where she was a cook with the Iowa City Community School District. She later worked for ACT in Iowa City, retiring in 1997.
She was devoted to her faith and was a 4-H leader for many years.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary Estle-Smith (Dean) of Iowa City, Julie Luchman (Clark) of Iowa City and Louise “Charlie” Estle (Mick Langguth) of Tiffin; six grandchildren, Joe (Anna) Luchman, Dan Luchman, Katha Luchman, Amy Smith, Jessica Smith and Jessica Harkey (Ryan); one great-granddaughter, Natalie; sisters, Marie Krzyzaniak and Josephine Dyer (Bob), both of St. Paul, Minn., and Marcia Kelnhofer of Green Bay, Wis.; and brothers, Michael Huss and George Huss, both of St. Paul, Minn.
Kate was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nick in 2003; a brother, John Huss; and a sister, Agnes Huss.
