Carr, Mary Ann
Mary Ann Carr, 80, entered the arms of angels on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, 2900 Hoover Ave., Ames. Burial will follow in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Mary Ann was born on Sept. 11, 1932, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Gwendolyn (Graves) and Walter Verhille. She graduated from Ottumwa Heights Academy and the University of Iowa. On June 18, 1955, Mary Ann married John (Jack) Carr in Ottumwa. They moved to the Ames area in 1955 and raised their family of five children. Mary Ann was a loving wife and mother. In the early 70s, she began volunteering in the Mary Greeley Gift Shop. This was a job she truly loved and became manager in 1978. She held this position for 31 years retiring in 2009. After retirement, she continued to serve Mary Greeley as a volunteer. Mary Ann was also a wedding coordinator at St. Cecelia Catholic Church for many years.
Her memberships include Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and Alumni, MGMC Auxiliary, PEO and St. Cecelia PTO.
Mary Ann's passion was collecting angels, sharing her faith through time and talent and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her five children, Kimberly (Charles) Buckingham of Walford, Timothy (Karen) Carr of Loveland, Colo., Douglas (Carolyn) Carr of Glencoe, Ill., Brian (Peggy) Carr of Ames, and Chuck (Kathy) Carr of Birmingham, Ala.; two brothers, Robert Verhille of Solon and Donald (Pam) Verhille of Cordova, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a multitude of great friends.
She is also survived by extended family, Bruce and Jean Townsend and their two daughters; and a very special friend, Linda Dasher.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents and her husband on Dec. 20, 1999.
Memorials in her memory can be made to the Mary Ann Carr Scholarship at MGMC, MGMC Foundation, Bliss Cancer Center, Israel Family Hospice House or St. Cecelia Catholic Church.
Visitation will be held Wednesday with the family present after 5 p.m. at St. Cecelia Church. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Mary Ann and her family.
Mary Ann was greatly loved and will be missed by many.
