Mary Kathryn Barry, 90, of Tempe, Ariz., formerly of Iowa City, died Thursday, March 9, 2017, surrounded by her family in Mesa, Ariz. Memorial services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Iowa City on July 6.
Survivors include her children, Jane Ann Sanborn and Marcia Ann Barry; brothers, Norman Kallaus, Tom Kallaus and Garry Kallaus; sisters, Jane Kallaus, Louise Sattler and Angela Hofer; and grandchildren, Katrina Linn Kupfer and Matthew Edward Sanborn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Barry; parents, Maude and Roy Kallaus; sisters, Yvonne Davis and Pauline Hershberger; and brother, Robert Kallaus
Mary was born May 1, 1926, in Washington, Iowa, to Roy and Maude (Welte) Kallaus. Mary attended Kalona High School and graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Iowa City. In 1948, Mary and Richard Barry married and spent many years in Cedar Rapids, where Mary worked as an obstetric nurse at Mercy Medical Center. In 1982, Mary and Richard moved to Tempe, where Mary helped establish the high risk obstetrical program at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz.
