The top 12 area football games for Week 5:
IOWA CITY HIGH at CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Thursday, at Kingston Stadium
Records and rankings: Class 4A second-rated City High is 4-0; Kennedy is 2-2.
Notable: The Little Hawks are fresh off a 52-24 demolition of Cedar Rapids Xavier, their MVC-record 32nd consecutive league victory. City's Ronald Thompson is the second-leading rusher in Class 4A at 833 yards; he has 10 touchdowns. Kennedy has done a 180-degree turn after an 0-2 start, picking up impressive wins over Cedar Rapids Washington and Dubuque Senior. The Cougars' offense, which had done little in the first two weeks, has posted 74 points in the last two weeks behind Trevor Heitland and Alex Hillyer.
CEDAR FALLS at CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Saints Field
Records and rankings: Class 4A top-rated Cedar Falls is 4-0; Xavier is 3-1.
Notable: After getting rocked by Iowa City High last week, it gets no easier Friday for Xavier. The Tigers have outscored their first four opponents by an average margin of 43-11. Barkley Hill has rushed for 916 yards (the most in Class 4A) and 19 touchdowns. Carter Valentine leads Xavier's attack with 472 rushing yards. Xavier had held its first three foes scoreless before City High put up 52 points a week ago.
VINTON-SHELLSBURG at MARION
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Thomas Park Field
Records and rankings: Vinton-Shellsburg is 2-2 overall, 0-2 Class 3A District 5; Marion is 3-1, 1-1.
Notable: Colton Storla is coming off a record-setting performance; the Marion running back rushed for a school-record seven touchdowns in the Indians' 58-35 drubbing of Anamosa last week. That came on the heels of the Indians' shutout loss to Western Dubuque the week before. Vinton-Shellsburg has suffered defensively since district play began; the Vikings have given up 99 points in the past two weeks.
LINN-MAR at CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at John Wall Field
Records and rankings: Class 4A sixth-rated Linn-Mar is 4-0; Prairie is 0-4.
Notable: Linn-Mar's margin of victory has grown each week, from 25 points to 28, to 32, to 40. Andy Henry has caught 17 passes for 344 yards and six touchdowns. The Lions' first five opponents have a combined record of 5-15. Prairie seemed to be making progress in close losses against Cedar Rapids Xavier and Cedar Falls, but took a step backward in a 50-8 loss to Iowa City West. Jace Hanna has thrown for 738 yards.
COLUMBUS JUNCTION at IOWA CITY REGINA
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Regina
Records and rankings: Columbus is 0-4 overall, 0-2 Class 2A District 5; No. 1 Regina is 4-0, 2-0.
Notable: This one has the potential to get ugly quickly. Regina has pushed its winning streak to 18 games, and has outscored its first four foes by a combined 162-9. Columbus, on the other hand, has been beaten badly in three of its first four games. Regina's Jacob Vollstedt has rushed for 515 yards and 10 touchdowns.
IOWA CITY WEST at CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium
Records and rankings: West is 3-1; Jefferson is 0-4.
Notable: Talk about a bounceback: West recovered from a Week 3 loss to Iowa City High by routing Cedar Rapids Prairie, 50-8, last week. Charles Rogers has passed for 617 yards and rushed for 349. Jefferson will try to end a 17-game losing skid. The J-Hawks have been decent defensively at times, but are averaging only 8 points per game.
CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON at DUBUQUE SENIOR
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Dubuque
Records and rankings: Washington is 2-2; Senior is 1-3.
Notable: Washington has hit the skids with back-to-back losses against Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Dubuque Wahlert, and need a win to turn things back in the right direction. Flynn Heald ranks second in 4A in receptions (40) and receiving yards (648). Winless in 2010, Senior has made some progress this year. The Rams beat Waterloo West in overtime and lost just 20-15 to Wahlert.
CEDAR VALLEY CHRISTIAN at CENTRAL CITY
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Central City
Records and rankings: Cedar Valley is 0-3; Central City is 0-5.
Notable: This is Cedar Valley's varsity finale this season (the Huskies do face three JV squads in October), and its best shot at a victory. The Huskies have developed into a decent passing team; they're averaging 156 yards per game in the air. Central City has managed just 36 points in five games. Clayton Visek has collected 58 tackles for the Wildcats.
STARMONT at MAQUOKETA VALLEY
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Delhi
Records and rankings: Starmont is 4-0 overall, 2-0 Class 1A District 5; Maquoketa Valley is 3-1, 1-1.
Notable: It gets no easier for Maquoketa Valley, which suffered a 40-0 loss to Turkey Valley last week, after starting with three straight wins. Starmont's Vinnie Otdoerfer is fourth among 1A ball carriers, rushing for 782 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is averaging 10.9 yards per carry. Starmont is averaging 43 points per game while allowing 6.8. Both of those figures rank in the top five in 1A.
BGM at IOWA VALLEY
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Marengo
Records and rankings: Both teams are 3-1 overall, 2-0 Class A District 6. BGM is ranked No. 9.
Notable: BGM appears to be on the same path as last year: Lose to Iowa City Regina in Week 1, then breeze through district play. The Bears have outscored their last three opponents by a margin of 152-0. Danny Brau has rushed for 481 yards and seven touchdowns. Iowa Valley has beaten its three Class A foes, 102-6. John Gormley is the second-leading rusher in Class A with 845 yards and 13 TDs.
DE WITT CENTRAL at MAQUOKETA
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Maquoketa
Records and rankings: Central is 2-2 overall, 2-0 Class 3A District 5; Maquoketa is 3-1, 2-0.
Notable: It's not off the wall to say that the winner of this annual Highway 61 grudge match might have the inside track to the 3A-5 title. Central knocked off Union, 20-13, last week at LaPorte City, and Maquoketa has rattled off three straight decisive victories. Craig Johnson and Chase Coakley have rushed for more than 400 yards apiece, with Coakley passing for 525.
WILTON at WEST LIBERTY
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at West Liberty
Records and rankings: Wilton is 2-2 overall, 1-1 Class 2A District 5; West Liberty is 3-1, 2-0.
Notable: If Iowa City Regina is the class of 2A-5, these are two of the top contenders for the second spot. After dropping a one-point decision to West Branch in Week 1, West Liberty has obliterated its next three opponents by a combined 188-8. Erik McKillip has rushed for 511 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Ronald Thompson and Iowa City High face Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Thursday; Nick Ball and Cedar Rapids Xavier host No. 1 Cedar Falls on Friday. (Cliff Jette/SourceMedia Group)
