Don Bosco (Gilbertville) High School baseball coach Corey Carlson is the recipient of Wartburg College's 2010 John Kurtt Alumni Coach of the Year award.
Carlson has led the Dons to strong success in Class 1A of the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Don Bosco, going into the 2011 campaign, has reeled off four straight 20-plus win seasons and Iowa Star Conference championships with two of those years ending with 30-or-more victories. His 2008 and 2010 Dons' teams both made it to state tournament competition with the 2008 squad ending as runners-up.
Carlson is a two-time Northeast Iowa District Coach of the Year and member of the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association's 100-win club with a 139-54 record over six seasons. He has coached eight all-state, 16 all-district and 22 all-Iowa Star Conference players.
He will be recognized at halftime of the men's basketball game against the University of Dubuque Saturday, Jan. 8. The John Kurtt Alumni Coach of the Year award has been given to a college alumni involved in coaching in either the high school or collegiate ranks each year since 1962.
