Cedar Rapids' Schebler, Sweeney assigned to Midwest League teams

Apr. 2, 2012 12:39 pm
Scott Schebler and Kellen Sweeney will be in the Midwest League this season, at least at the start. But you'll have to travel to see them play.
Former Cedar Rapids Prairie prep Schebler has been assigned by the parent Los Angeles Dodgers to the roster of the Great Lakes Loons. Former Cedar Rapids Jefferson prep Sweeney has been assigned by the Toronto Blue Jays to the roster of the Lansing Lugnuts.
Neither Great Lakes or Lansing plays at Cedar Rapids this season. The only Iowa appearance they'll make is in Burlington: Great Lakes on April 22-24 and Lansing on April 19-21.
Schebler, an outfielder, hit .285 with 17 doubles, 8 triples, 13 home runs and 58 RBIs in 70 games last season for Rookie-level Ogden. He was a 26th-round draft pick of the Dodgers in 2010 out of Des Moines Area Community College.
Sweeney - brother of Boston Red Sox outfielder Ryan Sweeney - hit just .114 in nine games for Rookie-level Bluefield in a 2011 season interrupted by injury. He was a second-round draft pick of the Blue Jays in 2010.
Other players of note on opening-day Midwest League rosters include Colin Rea. The former Cascade prep and University of Northern Iowa pitcher is with the Fort Wayne Wizards, after going 3-4 with a 2.21 ERA in 15 starts last season for short-season A Eugene.
Fort Wayne plays at Cedar Rapids on July 18-20.
