James Merritt, 84, passed away Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016. Services will be held at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Pkwy., West Des Moines, on Saturday, Oct. 8, with visitation from 11 a.m. to noon and the memorial service at noon. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.
James was born June 11, 1932, in Marengo, Iowa, to Florence (Hawkins) and Benjamin Merritt. He served in the U.S. Army and later worked as a refrigeration supervisor for Amana Refrigeration. He was a member of the American Legion and was a perfectionist woodworker. James enjoyed time with his family, grandchildren and his friends. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Beverly Merritt; children, Dave (Shelley) Merritt and Susan (Wayne) Baer; grandchildren, Robert (Melodee) Baer, Sara (Tobin) Wyatt and Travis, Emily and Katie Merritt; brother, Charles (Jean) Merritt; sister, Mary Louise Hayden; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Merritt.
James was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Keith and Ronald.
