Fairfield pulls away from Montezuma, 64-46

Jan. 7, 2017 12:17 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS — A basket by Shelby Helm opened the fourth quarter and got Montezuma within four points.
It was the Bravettes' final basket.
Fairfield closed the game with a 15-1 surge and downed Montezuma, 64-46, in a non-conference girls' basketball game as part of Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center.
Nicole Buch paced the Trojans (8-3) with 24 points, hitting 8 of 12 shots and 7 of 8 free throws. Kylie Kurtz added 18 points, Samantha Fritz 10.
The Trojans trailed for much of the first quarter, but a flurry of 3-pointers in the second period pushed them to a 32-23 halftime lead.
Fairfield extended the margin to 48-35 late in the third quarter, but Montezuma (7-4) scored the final seven points of the period, then Helm banked home a basket with about 7:40 left to make it 48-44. But the Bravettes went cold and Fairfield pulled away.
Shateah Wetering, Riley Gatton and Saphire Gatton scored 10 points apiece for Montezuma.
