Ullrich, Gary E.
Gary E. Ullrich, 62, of 1814 Hollywood Blvd., Iowa City, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at Mercy Iowa City. Gary chose to be cremated. Private burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. His family will greet friends on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Gary was born April 17, 1947, in Des Moines, to George and Gloria (Scartozzi) Ullrich. Gary graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines in 1965. He married Inga R. Wallize on May 21, 1983, in Ames. Gary worked at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the Dialysis Unit for many years; retiring in 2007. Gary was a member of the Iowa City VFW and the NRA. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War as a field medic.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Ullrich, and son, Jeffrey Ullrich, both of Iowa City; sister, Vickie (Michael) Ballard of Altoona; brother, Henry “Hank” of Des Moines; father-in-law, John Wallize of Waxahachie, Texas; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Pamela Wallize of Minneapolis, and LeeAnn (Jude) Smith of Red Oak, Texas.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Inga in 2006; his parents; and his stepfather, Bill.
