Dolores Pochobradsky Newport, 91, of Cedar Rapids, went to be with her Lord on Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, at West Ridge Care Center after years with Alzheimer's. Services: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Ludmila Catholic Church by the Rev. Dennis Juhl. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 3 to 7 p.m., and Friday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Dolores is survived by her children, Tom (Joyce) Pochobradsky of Cedar Rapids, Vickie (Mike) Langton of Racine, Wis., Debbie (Dale) Eickstaedt of Cedar Rapids, Ed Pochobradsky of Cedar Rapids, Judy (Gary) Huxford of Marengo, Gail Gerber of Vinton and Dave (Connie) Newport of Grinnell; her sister, Gail Gunderson of Cedar Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Jeanne Newport of Cedar Rapids; her brother-in-law, Dwayne Ellwood of Marion; her grandchildren, Micheala, KC, Tami, Shawn, Adam, Mandy, Laura, Kyle, Derek, Josh, Megan, Nick and Samantha; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Dolores was preceded in death by her two husbands, Emil Pochobradsky and Karl Newport; four sisters, Edna, Helen, Patty and Donna; and her son-in-law, Doug Gerber.
Dolores was born the daughter of Otto and Frances Benhart Shedek on March 14, 1923, in Oxford Junction and graduated from Oxford Junction High School in 1940. She married Emil Pochobradsky in 1946. He died in 1958. She married Karl Newport on June 24, 1978, in Cedar Rapids. He died in 2010. Dolores was a beautician and owner of Dolores's Beauty Salon for many years. After her retirement from the beauty shop she worked with Karl at Newport's Flowers. She was an active member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church and St. Monica Circle. She served as a eucharistic minister in addition to being a long-time volunteer at the St. Ludmila's Kolache Festival. She was a former member of the Fairfax American Legion Pekomy Post Auxiliary, the Model A Club and the Antique Car Club.
Dolores was devoted to her faith, her husbands and her family. She would travel with Karl to his and Emil's annual Army reunions and would enjoy their winters in Arizona. She loved cooking and making meals for her family, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and visiting with friends. She will be remembered for her active involvement with the church.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the nurses and aides at West Ridge Care Center Alzheimer's unit for their years of loving care and support.
