Garwood, Jack D.
Jack D. Garwood, 91, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at his home in rural Vinton following a sudden illness. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton (212 E. Sixth St.), with the Rev. Dr. Judith M. Bunyi officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until service time on Tuesday. Private committal services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton.
Jack was born Jan. 8, 1921, in Vinton, the son of Charles J. and Bernice (Willford) Garwood. On Jan. 10, 1943, he was united in marriage to Viroqua V. Winegard in Waterloo. Viroqua preceded Jack in death on Aug. 26, 2009.
Jack owned and operated the Sinclair service station in Vinton and then worked for the city of Vinton as a meter reader for several years, retiring at age 64.
Jack was an avid woodworker and enjoyed making grandfather clocks. He served with the Vinton Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was a past president of the Vinton Country Club.
He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Dwyn Garwood of Vinton and Blanche Garwood of Cedar Rapids; and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
In addition to his wife, Viroqua, Jack was preceded in death by his son, Jerry, in 2008; two brothers, Albert “Bert” Garwood and Dale Garwood; and two sisters, Mary Anderson and Martha Davis.
