Long, Gene
Gene Long, 74, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at his residence following a courageous battle with leukemia. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 East Sixth St., Vinton, with the Rev. Karen Larson officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday.
A memorial fund has been established.
Gene was born June 9, 1935, in Vinton, to “Buster” and Lucille (Joyce) Long. He graduated from Vinton's Washington High School in 1954. On Dec. 5, 1954, he was united in marriage to Nancy Mullane. The couple resided in Vinton all of their married life.
Gene is survived by his wife, Nancy of Vinton; his mother, Lucille Long Karr of Newhall; his son, John (Stephanie) Long of Belle Plaine; and his daughter, Penny (Jim) Wilson of Vinton. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jamie (Cheo Sierra) Wilson of Tucson, Ariz., Kim (Chad) Newton of Vinton, John P., Julie and Joshua Gene Long, all of Belle Plaine; and his great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Sophia Newton of Vinton. Other survivors include his siblings, Larry Long of Shellsburg, Coleen (Larry) Hertel of Forsythe, Mo., Joyce (Larry) Gahring of Atkins and Gloria Kammerer of St. Louis, Mo.; along with several nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father; his stepfather, Ray Karr; and his brothers, Bert and Ronnie Long.
