Von Ahsen, Elmer W.
Elmer W. Von Ahsen, 87, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at the Keystone Nursing Care Center in Keystone following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Blairstown. Interment will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blairstown with graveside military rites conducted by M.J. Kirby American Legion Post No. 170 of Blairstown and the Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Visitation will be held at the church from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Phillips Funeral Home in Blairstown is in charge of arrangements.
Elmer was born Aug. 18, 1923, at Williamsburg to Henry and Frieda (Huedepohl) Von Ahsen. During World War II, he served his nation in the U.S. Navy.
On Aug. 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Norma Hagen at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. She preceded him in death in 2005.
Elmer farmed in Iowa and Benton County and retired in 1987 before moving to Blairstown. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where he enjoyed playing dart ball, and the M.J. Kirby American Legion Post in Blairstown. He loved playing cards and traveling through the countryside.
He is survived by his daughters, Jeanette Von Ahsen of Belle Plaine, and Jolene Von Ahsen of Keystone; his grandson, Justin Von Ahsen of Belle Plaine; and his sisters-in-law, Esther Von Ahsen of Newhall and Laverna Von Ahsen of Conroy.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded by five brothers, one in infancy, and Henry, Erwin, Edgar, and Art Von Ahsen.
