SHARON MOONEY
Cedar Rapids
Sharon Marie Mooney, 76, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
She was born April 6, 1940, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Leonard Pierson and Marie (Woollums) Pierson. She was a 1958 graduate of Ottumwa High School. She married Steven Leroy Mooney on Jan. 12, 1963, in Lancaster, Mo.
Sharon worked in Ottumwa for Putman Welding Supply Co. as a bookkeeper. In 1963, she left Ottumwa with her husband, Steven, and shared a 21-year military career with the U.S. Navy. While stationed in Virginia Beach, Va., Sharon worked in the engraving department at the Oceana Naval Base Exchange. When Steve retired in 1979, they moved to their final destination in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Sharon's final job was with Life Investors Insurance Companies, now known as Transamerica Companies in Cedar Rapids. She worked as a clerk in the unclaimed property department.
Sharon truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures: cooking for friends and family, making crafts, shopping and spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. She loved to travel with her husband, Steven. She had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way, always there to help someone in need.
Sharon is survived by her husband of 53 years, Steven; sons, Chris (Linda) Mooney of Cedar Rapids and Lance (Chanda) Mooney of Marion; four grandchildren, Maria, Jodie, Lexi and Jacob; sister, Sheryl (Rick) Haines of Ottumwa; and sister-in-law, Bonnie (John) Wallace of Ottumwa.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Gayle Wilcox officiating. Family, friends and others whose lives Sharon touched are invited to visitation one hour before the funeral service at the funeral home to reminisce, grieve and support each other. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Following the burial, a reception will be held at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, 2424 42nd St. NE, Cedar Rapids.
The Mooney family would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to everyone who helped take care of Sharon and make her last days with us comfortable. A special thank-you to the staff of Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha which showed loving kindness to both Sharon and family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Sharon's name to Lovely Lane United Methodist Church.
