Mary E. Evens, 94, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab, Vinton, where she had been a resident the past two weeks. A public visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. Sixth St.), Vinton. A private family graveside service will be at Urbana Memorial Cemetery on Friday.
A memorial fund has been established for St. Luke's Hospice.
Mary was born Aug. 16, 1921, near Shellsburg, the daughter of Jahn and Verna (Rambo) Zahn. On Aug. 25, 1937, she was united in marriage to Pearl Irving "Pie" Evens. Mary served as the caretaker of the Urbana Cemetery for many years. She enjoyed the outdoors and dearly loved spending time with her many grand, great- and great-great-grandkids.
She is survived by five daughters, Doris Pugh of Springville, Evelyn (Don) Donley of Center Point, Betty Thompson of Cartledge, Ill., Rose Anderson of Shellsburg and Anna Seebach of Urbana; two sons, David (Pam) Evens and Gene Evens, both of Cedar Rapids; 22 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; 31 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel (Harry) Rublack of Vinton and Mardell Lint of Marengo; and her brother, Clarence "Laverne" (Esther) Zahn of Washington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, "Pie"; two sons, Beryl in infancy and "Ivan" in September of this year; and two grandsons, P.J. Evens and Jeff Evens.
