Martin, Elsie M.
Elsie M. Martin, 92, of Tipton, died Thursday, April 12, 2012 in Cedar Manor Nursing Home. Per Elsie's wishes there will be no funeral services. Private burial will occur at a later date in the Ridgewood Cemetery, North Liberty, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Friends of the Animals, Tipton. Online condolences may be shared with her family at .
Elsie Maxine Herring, daughter of Paul and Beryl Files Herring, was born April 6, 1920 in rural Johnson County. Elsie graduated from University High School in Iowa City in 1936 at the age of 16. On July 3, 1940 Elsie was united in marriage to Lester A. Martin in Kahoka, Mo. Elsie was a homemaker and the “lunch lady” at Penn School in North Liberty.
Elsie is survived by her daughter, Beryl (Mike) Rocca of Rochester, Iowa; son, Gerald (Janis) Martin of Bend, Ore.; half-sisters, Helen Davis of Alaska and Irma Herring of Iowa City; half-brothers, Tim Herring of Ainsworth, Iowa, Bob Herring of Tiffin, Iowa, Gene Herring of Marion, Iowa, and Jack Herring of Iowa City, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester; sisters, Wilma Ferguson and Geraldine Gassman; brother, Glen Herring; and two half-sisters, Mary Ann Luedeman and Emily Konigsacker.
Elsie enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors. She loved to snowmobile, play cards, and was a great Hawkeye fan. But most of all she enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
