Joel C. Grimes, M.D., 62, of Del Mar, Calif., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, in San Diego, Calif. Services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at Seaside Center for Spiritual Living, 1613 Lake Dr., Encinitas, CA 92024 (San Diego County). Inurnment: Oak Hill Cemetery, Colesburg, at a later date.
Survivors include his significant other, Nancy Kygar; brother, Jeff Grimes of Elkader; niece, Michele Grimes of Chicago, nephew, Michael (Chelsea); great-nephew, Bobby Grimes of Elkader; sister-in-law, Helen Schwietert (Kenny) of Colesburg; and Jim and Kelly Dunn and Molly and Colleen of Encinitas, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Shirley Grimes.
Joel was a 1971 graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington High School, a 1975 graduate of Iowa State University and a 1980 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He carried out an anesthesiology residency at Mercy Hospital in San Diego.
He was a member of the Washington High School championship swimming team during the Hal Krizan era.
