Iowa man sentenced for selling fake Viagra, Cialis
Feb. 9, 2012 12:15 pm
An Iowa insurance agent who started a side business selling unapproved erectile dysfunction pills will serve two months in jail.
Federal prosecutors announced Thursday David Kempema of Sioux City received the sentence, which was several months shorter than what they sought, on one count of trafficking misbranded drugs with intent to defraud.
Court records show Kempema purchased two types of pills from India that hadn't been approved by regulators, and marketed them to customers online as Viagra and Cialis. Prosecutors say he shipped the drugs using a fake return address from Costa Rica and continued selling them even after agents raided his business in 2010 and warned he was breaking the law.
Kempema acknowledged selling more than 3,700 pills to 95 customers and agreed to pay $23,000 in restitution.
