H. Dale St. John, 70, died Thursday, July 9, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hrabak Funeral Home, Belle Plaine. Burial will be in Rector Cemetery, rural Chelsea. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
H. Dale St. John Jr. was born in Iowa City on Dec. 1, 1944, the son of Marjorie (Wyant) and Harry Dale St. John Sr. His stepfather was J.J. "Skeeter" Gardner and a longtime father figure to Dale.
Dale lived in Golden Colo., while growing up, but moved to Marengo and completed his education at Iowa Valley, graduating with the class of 1963. He went on to attend Ellsworth College.
On Nov. 7, 1964, Dale married Kay Ellyn Strong at St. John's Lutheran Church in Marengo. Dale and Kay made their home in Belle Plaine and have been active members of the community. Dale owned and operated Dale's Barber Shop in Belle Plaine for 45 years, and always supported high school athletic programs and the local bowling alley. He always made time for his children and grandchildren.
His survivors include his wife, Kay; four sons, H. Dale St. John III (friend Teri) of Waterloo, Trenton (Stacy) St. John of North Liberty, Bryan (Chrissy) St. John of Belle Plaine and Scott St. John of Toledo; one daughter, Lynette St. John (friend Jeff) of Belle Plaine; two sisters, Linda (Ken) Sly and Sheryl (Terry) Bearshear; 17 grand-children and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, and a brother, James St. John.
Dale enjoyed time with his family and especially his grandchildren.
He had a passion for riding motorcycles, playing pool and cards, water skiing and traveling.
