John D. Hakes passed away Sept. 26, 2015, after a short illness.
John was born Feb. 18,
1947, to Al Delbert and Judith Hakes in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. John served in the Navy from October 1964 through December 1967, on the USS Columbus. On April 27, 1986, he married Pam Silvers. They divorced in 1989.
John enjoyed crossword puzzles, fishing and Chicago Bears football.
Left to cherish John's memory are his son, Thomas Scott; stepson, Justin Silvers; stepgrandson, Gabe; six siblings; and several close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jiggs and Judith Hakes; and nine siblings.
John never met a stranger and would help anyone in need.
There will be no funeral service. A celebration of life potluck will be Oct. 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Wenceslaus Church, 1224 Fifth St. SE, Cedar Rapids.
