Iowa City second most popular for Airbnb stays in Iowa
Iowa City was the second most popular city in Iowa for Airbnb stays this year, according to data released Wednesday by the company.
The approximately 1,100 Iowa-based Airbnb hosts - those who rent out extra rooms or their homes to visitors using the online platform - made $5.8 million in income in 2017, Airbnb said in a news release.
Overall, about 60,000 people rented an Airbnb space in Iowa this year.
State capital Des Moines was the most popular destination, seeing just under 11,300 'guest arrivals” in the past 12 months. By comparison, Iowa City had 5,600 guest stays.
Cedar Rapids had 1,910, coming in as the sixth most popular place.
In October, Airbnb announced it had reached an agreement with Iowa to collect hotel and motel sales taxes in the state. The vacation rental marketplace began collecting those taxes on behalf of hosts in November.
