Widdel, Laurence 'Larry' A.
Laurence “Larry” A. Widdel, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, July 23, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. David Miller will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Burial will take place at Linwood Cemetery.
Surviving is his children, Gary Widdel and Gail Horne and husband Bob of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Jason (Kari) Widdel, Joel (Tara) Widdel, Justin (Shawna) Widdel, Staci (Josh) Siddell, Kristin (Chris) Heck, Michael Horne and Todd (Erin Van Kerckhove) Horne; her great-grandchildren, Kinsey and Melanie Widdel, Elliana and Elijah Siddell, Raelyn and Alexus Van Kerckhove, and Cora and Libby Heck; a sister, Berniece Schumacher of Readlyn; a brother, Marvin Widdel and wife Elsie of Denver; a brother-in-law, Clarence Main of Waterloo; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Lang of Winthrop, Earlene Phelps of Vinton, Mert Hare of Rowley, and Carol Brown of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Ellen Widdel; his parents; and a brother-in-law, LaVerne Schumacher.
Larry was born April 5, 1919, in rural Klinger, Iowa, the son of August and O'Tillie Mathias Widdel. He married Lois Ellen Main on Aug. 16, 1946, in Klinger. Larry worked for Rockwell as an electronics technician for 25 years, retiring in 1984. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as elder, usher and helped with church funerals.
Larry served in the Army during World War II. He was a charter member of the V. F. W Post 788, where he served as commander, board of trustees, Building Committee, color Ggard and conducting many of the military honors for funerals. In his spare time, Larry enjoyed flower gardens, fishing, RV travel and tinkering with electronics.
