Daryl O. Burkett, 87, formerly of Iowa City, died Dec. 22, 2014, at the Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center. A gathering time for family and friends to remember Daryl will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Private burial services will be held at the Unity Cemetery in rural Johnson County, Iowa.

Daryl O'Neil Burkett was born May 14, 1927, in Kalona, Iowa, the son of Loyal I. and Nellie M. Thompson Burkett. His family lived in Sunnyville, Calif., at the time of his high school graduation. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II serving his country. Returning to Iowa City, he was united in marriage to Lila Stutzman on Dec. 19, 1945, in Iowa City.
For over 25 years, he worked for the University of Iowa as a building inspector, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Iowa City Masonic Lodge and Shriners.
His family includes two children and their spouses, Steve and Carolyn Burkett of Richmond, Ind., and Patricia and Bruce McNichol of Iowa City; eight grandchildren; and two brothers, Ronald and Dean Burkett.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lila, on Oct. 29, 2000; his son, Larry; his second wife, Carol Kreuziger of Watertown, Wis.; and two brothers, Aubrey and Donald Burkett.
