DR. DARRYL L. DOCHTERMAN
Cedar Rapids
Dr. Darryl L. Dochterman, 75, passed away suddenly Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015. He will be greatly missed by family, colleagues and friends.
Darryl was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he spent his younger years. By the age of 12, he knew he wanted to be a physician. He attended the University of South Dakota and the University of Iowa where he received his undergraduate degree in science and his medical degree. He then served his internship at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. During the Vietnam War, he served as a captain in the Air Force and was stationed in Montgomery, Ala. While there he went through flight school and became a flight surgeon. After his two year military duty, he and his family decided to move to Lexington, Ky. There he enrolled in the residency program in radiology at the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Dochterman spent the next 30 years practicing at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. He was instrumental in bringing the first MRI machine to Kentucky and was on top of his game in many new medical techniques. He was well loved by his colleagues and his patients. Darryl was devoted to medicine, to St. Joe Hospital and enjoyed every year of his practice.
He had a great passion for travel, photography, skiing, hiking and sailing, as well as teaching his grandchildren about preparing for future academic rigors through logic and perseverance.
His memory will be cherished by his daughter, Suzanne and husband Rick Nunnelley and their children, Kaitlyn and Caroline of Lexington; his daughter, Tonya and husband Todd Culley and their sons, Zachary and Nicholas of Columbia, Mo.; his devoted wife and friend of 55 years, Kathryn; and his sister, Carol of Barnsville, Ga.
