Roderic W. Malcolm died on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence. He donated his body to the UIHC Deeded Body Program. Honoring his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. However, there will be a memorial organ recital on the Casavant Pipe Organ that he and his husband, Bill Dickinson, gave to their church, The Congregational United Church of Christ, in 2007. The date of the recital will be later this year.
Rod was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa, on Dec. 16, 1933, to Harlan and Thelma Malcolm. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School and earned a B.S. degree from the University of Iowa in 1955. As a ROTC student, Rod joined the U.S. Air Force and was a captain and pilot. One of his most memorable experiences in the Air Force was being part of a squadron that flew new B-123s to the Saudi Arabian Royal Airforce in 1958.
Rod received his MSW degree from the University of Chicago in 1965. He worked for the State of Illinois Children and Family Services before working for various social work agencies and hospitals in the Chicago area.
A resident of Iowa City for the past 31 years, Rod is survived by his partner/husband of 55 years; his aunt, Nadine Sandberg; a niece, Melissa (Kent) Williams and nephews, Scott (Mary), Rod (Tracy) and Judd (Kendra) Malcolm.
Special thanks for Rod's care to Dr. Rohan Garje, Dr. Fred Ovrom, P.A. Deborah Ely, Iowa City Hospice, and especially the entire nursing staff at Oaknoll Health Center.
Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Oaknoll Foundation.
