Norma Jean Fischels,
75, of Independence, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, after an extended illness. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at St. John's Evangelist Catholic Church, Independence.
Norma was born March 20, 1940, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Helen Wagner (Becker). She attended high school at Don Bosco in Gilbertville, graduating in 1958. On Aug. 27, 1958, she was united in marriage to Michael Fischels at the St. Athanasius Church in Jesup. Norma retired from the Independence Mental Health Institute in 1997, and later from Lakeview Lodge Assisted Living, Waterloo.
Norma enjoyed many things in life, including traveling, spending winters in the Arizona/Nevada area with her husband, Michael, but near and dear to her was her family.
Norma's family includes husband, Michael Fischels; and her five children, Deb (Craig) Conklin of Aiken, S.C., Linda (Wayne) Hosch of Walker, Roger (Lisa) Fischels, Tom (Toni Dostal) Fischels and Brian Fischels, all of Independence. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Nikki (Jed) Alexander, Kyle (Leah) Hosch, Holli (Dustin) Osvald and Keaton, Kenyon and Kaylee Hosch, Ali and Brad Conklin, Jasmine (Seth) Ebling and Michael Fischels; two great-grandchildren, Kipton and Mila Alexander; and siblings, Marian (Ray) Schmitz of Jesup, Mike (Ruth) Wagner of Marion, Don (Eileen) Wagner of Arlington, Texas, and Diane (Paul) Gudenkauf of Jesup.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents.
In accordance with Norma's wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa, for education and research.
