James Kent Brant, 87, died Thursday, June 9, 2016, at Rock Ridge Residential Care in Shellsburg following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 13, at Phillips Funeral Home, Keystone, with Pastor Mike Ferguson officiating. Interment will be at the Keystone Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps. Visitation will be from to 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
James was born April 13, 1929, in Keystone to Jesse and Mata (Schliemann) Brant. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in September 1951 and served his nation until being honorably discharged at the rank of corporal in September 1953. On June 4, 1966, he was united in marriage to Darlene Kabela at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.
James farmed and also was employed at Wiecks Feed, LaSalle School and Moorman Manufacturing Co.
He was a member of the AACA Automobile Club and John Deere 2-Cylinder Club. He enjoyed going to auctions and collecting farm machinery and tractors.
In addition to his wife, Darlene, of Atkins; he is survived by his sons, Kim (Barb) Brant of Atkins and Garry (Isabelle) Brant of Williamsburg; his daughter, Karen Brant of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Amanda (Michael) Haugen, Rachel Brant, Cody Canterbury, Casey Brant and Amy (Brant) Nichols; his great-grandchild, Steven Nichols; his sisters, Marilyn (William) Stones of California and Dorothy (Wilfred) Becker of Newhall; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents; he was preceded by his first wife, Eva Floreen (Bryan) Brant; his son, Kent Brant; his brothers, Marvin and Virgil; and his sister, Janet Holtz.
