Leon James Suchomel, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Celebration of life services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, at 2121 Bowling St. SW, where full military rites will be conducted. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Brosh Chapel. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Leon was born Dec. 5, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Wesley and Julia (Bartosh) Suchomel. He graduated from Wilson High School, Class of 1953. Leon served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958, just after the Korean conflict. Leon was united in marriage to Darlene Novak on April 15, 1961, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He worked at Archer Daniels Midland for over 22 years. Leon enjoyed fishing, gambling, traveling, attending Navy get-togethers, going to various accordion club events and, most of all, spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Leon is survived by his wife of over 57 years, Darlene; his daughter, Cindy (Kim) Schlitter of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Kelly (Brian) Coselman and Jeffrey (Tanya) Walters; great-grandchildren, Leah, Gage, Bayla and Caitlyn; his brother, Glenn Suchomel of Chelsea; his sister-in-law, Dolores Suchomel; as well as his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Albert (LaVonne) Suchomel, Ruthy (Don) Hunter and Harold Suchomel; and his great-grandson, Kaleb Walters.
