David L. Larsen, 62, of Kalona has been sentenced to serve six months in prison for willfully failing to file income taxes, United States Attourney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt announced in a Department of Justice press release on Friday.
According to the Department of Justice press release, Larsen failed to file taxes for income obtained through the sale and development of commercial property and Federal subsides he received through the Department of Agriculture.
The report indicates that on October 22, 2010, Larsen pleaded guilty for failing to file a tax return for 2006 and also admitted that he had not filed an income tax return since 1996. He subsequently filed backed income tax after the IRS began its criminal investigations.
From 2003-2007, court records show that Larsen had an income of $859,262. Lawsen's tax liability was approximately $123,176, the release said.
“This was fundamentally a crime of greed,” Klinefeldt said. “This prosecution vindicates the interests of the vast majority of Iowans who pay their taxes and file their income tax returns as required under the law.”
Larsen will be under court ordered supervision for one year after his release. During that time, Larsen will be required to cooperate with the IRS to begin the repayment of his tax liabilities, the release said.
