Donald M. Adams, 91, of Independence, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.
Don was born July 31, 1923, in Quasqueton, Iowa, the son of Marshall E. and Grace M. (House) Adams. He was a 1941 graduate of the Quasqueton Consolidated High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames for a year. On Dec. 15, 1942, Don enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving until his discharge on Jan. 31, 1944. On Aug. 12, 1944, he was united in marriage to Edna M. Kress in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Quasqueton. On Oct. 19, 1944, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served until his discharge on April 22, 1946. Following his discharge, the couple made their home in Utah where Don was employed as a truck driver for 30 years driving in 21 states before his retirement in 1984. Don received an award for driving over
4 million miles without an accident. Following the death of his wife of 62 years, Edna, on Feb. 7, 2007, Don returned to the Independence area.
Don loved to travel and camp with his wife, they enjoyed square and round dancing and played in the Independence Community Band. He was a member of the Eastern Star, The El Kahir Shrine Temple and Shrine Band, the Masonic Lodge and the Quasqueton Area Historical Society.
He is survived by a sister, Virginia Hocken of Cedar Falls, and nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, with the Rev. John Hougen officiating. Interment will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Quasqueton Cemetery, Quasqueton, with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
