Marvel Marilyn Schmidt, 87, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. A visitation will take place one-half hour before the service. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Marvel was born June 20, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Georgia Rosendahl. She was raised on a farm in Prairieburg and shared stories about living through the Great Depression. She would tell her grandchildren that as a
young girl she rode a pony to a one-room schoolhouse in Prairieburg.
Following graduation from Coggon High School, she worked as a switchboard operator at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Cedar Rapids. Marvel was united in marriage to Erwin "Buss" J. Schmidt in May 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. They shared many memories together until his passing in 1995.
Marvel was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking for her family and was a nurturing caretaker. Many family occasions were spent in the large back yard on 30th Street NE, Cedar Rapids, where she lived for 62 years. Marvel has been a longstanding Hawkeye fan.
She was
preceded in death by her
husband, parents, a brother and a sister.
Left to cherish Marvel's memory are her children, Virginia Smelser, William (Deborah) Schmidt, Gary (Sara) Schmidt and Barbara (Patrick) Doyle; sisters, Doris Baumann and Joan Jossie; grandchildren, Lindsay Kaiser, Meaghan Kandt, Ted Schmidt, Andrew Schmidt, Wilson Schmidt, Madeline Doyle and Noah Doyle; and great-grandchildren, Hadley Kandt and Weston Kaiser.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association East Central Iowa Chapter or UnityPoint Hospice.
