Katherine L. Perkins,
89, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center after a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A vigil service followed by a rosary will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home where friends may visit with the family until 7 p.m. Friends may also visit with the family after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Katherine is survived by her husband, Cecil; son, Robert (Lynette) Perkins; daughter, Mary Perkins; granddaughters, Kimberly and Sarah Perkins; sister Margaret Kenney; and sister-in-law, Blanche Oujiri, all of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, George "Gus" Oujiri; and brother-in-law, Mike Kenney.
Katherine Louise was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Cedar Rapids in a taxi cab on the way to the hospital. She attended St. Patrick School and graduated from Mount Mercy in 1946. She married Cecil Robert Perkins on May 2, 1953, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Katherine worked at Iowa Electric Light and Power Company for many years.
Katherine enjoyed dancing, skiing and ice skating (as a young adult), traveling, photography, caring for her lawn, bowling and eating out. Spending time with friends and family was special to her. She may have also taken a trip or two to Tama for the slots and liked Sunday afternoon drives. She liked late night walks around the block and stayed active while swimming, biking, playing board games and tennis, writing in her journal and listening to Lawrence Welk and big band music. She had a strong faith in the Catholic tradition and was a member of Mother Cabrini Rosary Circle and St. Jude Catholic Church.
A greeting Katherine included in many of her cards ended with "May the loving heart of Jesus bless you now and all the days of your life."
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Catholic Church.
