He was preceded in death by his parents and brother- in-law.
Jan was born Jan. 4, 1936, in Marion, Ohio, to Frances (Henline) and Marion Hornbeck. He attended schools in Marion, Ohio, Bradenton, Fla., and Woodward, Okla., where he was active in football and wrestling. He also enjoyed scouting where he achieved Explorer Scouts. It was at this time he started his lifelong hobby of ham radio operator. He continued his education at the University of Oklahoma from 1954 to 1958 and graduated with an electrical engineering degree. He enrolled in the Army ROTC and after college, entered active service and served several years in the reserve. He started at Collins Radio as an electrical design engineer in 1959, working through 1995.
In addition to his ham radio hobby, Jan enjoyed reading and was interested in archaeology, astronomy and space exploration.
During retirement, he helped his wife with collecting and then selling antiques at flea markets, where they shared fun with new friends.
Together, Jan and Sally enjoyed and collected both music and movies of many kinds and from many time periods. Public TV and TCM have been favorite sources for such entertainment in recent years amid health issues.
Jan was a devoted caregiver for his disabled son and for his wife.
He was an intelligent, humorous, kind and generous man and will forever remain in the memory and hearts of those who loved him.
Memorials may be made to UnityPoint-St. Luke's Foundation, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Iowa Lions Eye Bank.
