A 17-year-old was sentenced to five years in prison Friday for shooting into a southwest side apartment last November in retaliation for a previous robbery of the teen.
Tyrek Adams, 16 at time of arrest, pleaded guilty in June to intimidation with a dangerous weapon. He fired a .40 caliber handgun multiple times into the apartment at 1960 Rockford Road SW in Cedar Rapids on Nov. 24, 2014.
First Assistant Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks said the intended victim, two other adults and an infant were in the apartment at the time. One shot grazed the victim's pant leg but he wasn't injured. Other shots broke out windows
The shooting was in retaliation for a previous 'drug deal gone bad,' Maybanks said. Adams told police he had previously gone to the victim's apartment to buy drugs but when he showed up the victim in this shooting robbed him.
Adams and another man convicted in the case, Korderro Carter, 20, left after the shooting with two other people in a car, Maybanks said, but police stopped them a short time later. Officers found the .40 caliber and Carter's 9mm handgun in the trunk of the car, along with marijuana and prescription drugs.
Maybanks said he asked for prison time because this was a serious crime and people firing guns at others or buildings need to be held accountable.
"This could have turned into a murder," Maybanks said.
Adams and Carter admitted they saw shadows in the apartment and fired their weapons, Maybanks said. Carter only fired once because his gun jammed but Adams fired multiple shots.
John Breitbach, Adams' lawyer, asked for probation.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Chad Kepros said he was sentencing Adams to prison because this was a violent crime that involved the use of a gun.
