'On The Record' podcast: David Keegan's resentencing and a family's grief

Aug. 5, 2016 6:00 pm, Updated: Jun. 3, 2022 1:38 pm
This week's On the Record talks about the resentencing of David Keegan, 32, of Marion, who was convicted at age 17 for the 2002 robbery and murder of a pizza delivery driver, Greg Wells, 31, of Cedar Rapids.
Keegan ordered a pizza and he and his accomplice Brandy Byrd planned to rob the delivery driver. Byrd struck Wells 10 to 12 times in the head with a claw hammer and Keegan tried to smother him with a pillow, and when that didn't work, he cut his throat with a knife.
Wells died from head injuries and lacerations to his neck.
Keegan was sentenced to life in prison without parole, but because the U.S. Supreme Court banned life sentences for juvenile offenders, Keegan -- after serving 14 years in prison -- was resentenced Friday to life in prison with the possibility of immediate parole.
My guests today are First Assistant Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks and Wells' brother Paul Wells of Springfield, Ill., and sister Teresa Ellickson of North Liberty.
On the Record is a weekly podcast focusing on court cases and legal issues of the day hosted by Trish Mehaffey and produced by Richard Pratt.
David Keegan speaks during a resentencing hearing at Linn County District Court in Cedar Rapids on Friday, Aug. 5, 2016. Keegan was convicted as a 17-year-old in 2002 of first-degree murder and second-degree robbery in the death of pizza delivery man Greg Wells. Keegan stabbed and bludgeoned Wells when he made his delivery to KeeganÕs Marion apartment. (Stephen Mally/The Gazette)
