Fun Facts: Iowa-Indiana

Mar. 2, 2015 3:26 pm
It's not a short drive from Cedar Rapids to Bloomington. Nor is it the easiest trip when Tuesday's weather forecast called for snow, sleet and rain most of the way.
What I'm looking for here is a little pity. Or cash. Yeah, I'll go with the cash. Send cash.
In the meantime, here are some Fun Facts:
1. Both Iowa and Indiana are 19-10.
2. Iowa has lost its last three games at Indiana by an average margin of 11.3 points.
3. Indiana lost at home to Eastern Washington, which is in third place in the Big Sky Conference behind Sacramento State and Montana. Sacramento State began the season with a 104-58 loss to Gonzaga.
4. It was well-documented that Iowa's Aaron White scored a career-high 29 points last Wednesday in Iowa's win over Illinois. Saturday at Penn State, Hawkeye guard Mike Gesell had a career-high five steals.
5. Indiana has alternated wins and losses in its last nine games. It lost its most-recent game, last Wednesday at Northwestern.
6. Iowa won six games in February for the first time since 1989. The Hawkeyes had an average +12.3 scoring margin in the month.
7. The Hoosiers have made 9.3 three-point shots per game, which ranks first in the Big Ten and ninth nationally. They made a school-record 18 threes in 32 tries in their 90-71 home win over Minnesota on Feb. 15. IU's 41.1 percent 3-point shooting ranks fourth in the nation (Drake is third.).
8. Indiana guard Kevin 'Yogi” Ferrell got his nickname at a very young age from his mother because he ate a lot. Presumably, that made her think of Yogi Bear, not Maharishi Manesh Yogi.
9. Indiana associate head coach Tim Buckley was an assistant coach on Steve Alford's 2006-07 Iowa staff. It was Alford's last year at Iowa. Alford's coaching record since that season is 201-73.
10. Tom Crean was 8-46 in the Big Ten in his first three seasons at Indiana. He is 41-29 since.
11. In 2007, Indiana University trustees said IU should build a new basketball arena rather than renovating Assembly Hall, which opened in 1971. They deemed that the difference in costs between a renovation and a new building wouldn't be wide enough to justify renovating. That idea was eventually scrapped, and last winter the trustees approved a capital improvements project to renovate the arena in time for the 2016-17 season.
12. There are five Bloomingtons in Big Ten states. They are (with 2010 populations): Bloomington, Minn. (82,893), Bloomington, Ind. (80,610), Bloomington, Ill. (76,610), Bloomington, Wis. (735), and Bloomington, Neb. (103).
13. The movie 'Hoosiers” had nothing to do with Bloomington or Indiana University. The movie 'Breaking Away” was set in Bloomington and some of it was filmed there. Both are excellent.
