St. Clair, Clyde Hill
VINTON - Clyde Hill St. Clair was born to Glenn M. and Jesse Lucille (Hill) St. Clair in Vinton, Iowa, on Jan. 27, 1918. He was a lifelong resident of Vinton with the exception of years he spent attending Cornell College in Mount Vernon and proudly serving his country as a decoder in the Air Corps during World War II.
During his time in the military, Clyde met Alice Mae Stearns of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They were married Oct. 9, 1946. They made their home in Vinton and owned and operated the Benton County Finance Co., a family business.
Lots of great times were spent on the Cedar River at the family cabin which Clyde and his father built. He also enjoyed music, dancing, golfing, bowling and time spent with family. His sense of humor and his creative abilities awarded him many friendships. He held past membership with the Vinton Country Club and the Vinton Lions Club and was a current member of the American Legion.
Clyde passed away due to complications of aging on Oct. 6, 2010, at the Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab Center. He very much appreciated his caregivers and friends at that facility.
Surviving are his three daughters, Mary (Dave) Coots, Sue Sweet and Jane (Bill) White; seven grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Schooley, Scott (Hollie) Coots, Tyneal (Jody) Herger, Zachary (Tracy) Sweet, Amber (Nate) Sisler, Jenny (Josh) Wyckoff and Jay White; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Clyde was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; his parents, Glenn and Jesse St. Clair; his sister, Mary Virginia Davis; and his niece, Mary Linda Radcliffe.
Private committal services, with military honors will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Evergreen Cemetery. Clyde's family will receive friends at Phillips Funeral Home, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established.
