Cairy, Stanley D.
Stanley D. Cairy, 75, of Alburnett, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, as a result of complications of congestive heart failure. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Central City, by Father Wayne Droessler. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, with the rosary beginning at 7 p.m. Burial: Mount Clark Cemetery, Central City. Military Honors by AMVETS Post No. 37 and American Legion, Wapsi Post No. 421, both of Central City.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Rose; children, James Cairy of Troy Mills, Patricia Bartels of Roberts, Ill., Douglas (Susan) Cairy of Anamosa, Brian (Kari) Cairy of Marion, and Nancy (Mike) Wieland of Alburnett; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Bell of Toddville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jason Limkemann; and a son-in-law, Scott Bartels.
Stan was born Nov. 10, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Robert and Anna M. (Soukup) Cairy. After graduating from high school, Stan was employed in the branch house accounting department of Wilson & Co. On December 25, 1954, Stan was united in marriage to Rose Hildebrand at the Balboa Naval Chapel. Stan then served eight years in the U.S. Navy, including the Korean conflict. Stan began a career as an accountant in the automobile business in Jacksonville, Fla., at an Edsel dealership and then moved on to Studebaker, Mercedes, Pontiac and Chevrolet with his final 32 years at McGrath Automotive Group in Cedar Rapids, retiring as vice-president in 2005. Stan really enjoyed the excitement of the automobile business, especially working for three generations of McGraths.
Stan also farmed with his wife, Rose, west of Alburnett for 40 years (in his spare time). Stan enjoyed farming, gardening, camping and fishing, especially on the Mississippi. He served as past-president of the Winnebago Club, and had been a member of St. Stephen's for 45 years.
