Fern Elizabeth Mollenhauer, 92, of Alburnett, Iowa, went home peacefully
to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, at Lafayette Christian Church, rural Alburnett, conducted by Pastor Jamie Smid. Family also will greet friends one hour before the service at the church. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett.
Fern was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Center Point, Iowa, the daughter of Ira and Alice (Jones) Alden. She was united in marriage to Paul W. Mollenhauer on Dec. 12, 1945, in Troy Mills. Fern was a lifelong farm wife and also worked in the fabric department at Sears for many years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cake decorating and quilting, and greatly enjoyed visits from friends and family. Fern had a strong faith in God and was an active member of Lafayette Christian Church since she was 14 years old.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, Clarence Joyce; nieces, Nadine (Steve) Smith, Marlene (Dennis) Mills, Rebecca Hanrahan, Deborah (Mark) Moser and Beth (Jeff) Kurth; and many great-nieces and -nephews, great-great-nieces and -nephews and cousins.
Fern was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Paul; parents; sister, Hazel Joyce; brother, Harold Alden; niece, Norma Johnson; and nephews, Andrew and Michael Alden.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Fern's church family, friends and neighbors who assisted in making it possible for her to remain living in her home.
