Mildred Louise (Layher) Atz, 96, of Alburnett, passed away Friday, July 7, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Friday, July 14, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 13, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Stateroom. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mildred was born Aug. 11, 1920, the daughter of Clarence and Mae (Ridgeway) Layher, in Rockville, Mo. She was married to Raymond T. Atz on Feb. 16, 1938, in Osceola, Mo. Mildred worked as a housekeeper and nanny for many years. In the 1950s, she wrote the Alburnett news for the Central City News Letter and Marion Sentinel. During the 1970s, Mildred was a vendor at the Marion Farmers' Market. She was an avid gardener and had many hobbies, including crafts, playing cards, sewing, needlework, knitting and crocheting. Many who visited Mildred often would go home with a handmade dishcloth.
Mildred was a member of Alburnett United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Alburnett Garden Club, Alburnett Historical Society, Alburnett Senior Citizen Club, Senior Luncheon Club, Tuesday Breakfast Club, a square dance club and, in the early 1950s, she organized the Alburnett Book Exchange Club.
Survivors include her daughters, Jerris (Ronald) Richardson of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Jalaa Weaver of Alburnett; five grandchildren, Ret. Col. James (Penny) Richardson, Jenice (David Hess) Richardson, Jon Richardson, Josh (Kristin) Conway and Holly (Augustin) Reyes; eight great-grandchildren; stepson, James, of Minnesota; six stepgrandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren; seven step-great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sons, Donald and Dick; siblings, Lois, Lucille and Lawrence; a son-in-law; stepdaughter; and two stepgrandsons.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Mercy of Hospice for their loving care of Mildred, and her caregiver and special friend, Grace Moyer.
