Gerald L. "Jerry' Koss, 87, of River Bend Assisted Living, formerly of 23576 Pleasant Grove Rd., Placid, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, at 2:15 a.m., at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade. Friends and relatives of Jerry may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth where a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Services for Jerry will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at St. John's Catholic Church in Placid with the Rev. Michael Schueller Presiding. Burial will be held in St. John's Cemetery in Placid with full military honors afforded by the Epworth John White American Legion Post No. 650.
He was born Jan. 22, 1928, in Ely, Iowa, the son of Louis J. and Emily (Petrak) Koss. He received his education in the rural Ely area schools. On April 29, 1954, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Dohnalek at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. The couple farmed in the Mount Vernon area until 1975 at which time they moved to Placid.
He was an Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, a member of the Iowa & National Ayrshire Associations, having served on the board of directors and a member of the Ely American Legion Post No. 555.
He was a kind and gentle man who always had a smile for everybody He loved sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. He always enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He had a great passion for Ayrshire cattle.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Koss of Placid; four children, Sheryl (Charles) Brindle of Clarion, Denise (Wayne) Brunsman of New Vienna, Sue Koss of Clinton and David (Karen) Koss of Epworth; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Freshour of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Wilmer and Margaret Koss; and a brother-in-law, Hersh Freshour.
