Emmett E. Friedman, 87, of Cedar Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 4, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be before the service at 9 a.m. Burial will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Emmett was born Nov. 11, 1927, to Leo and Leona (Zewen) Friedman in Luxemburg, Iowa. He graduated from Loras Academy in Dubuque. Emmett married Germaine Schuster on June 6, 1949, in New Vienna. They were married for 53 wonderful years before her passing in 2003. He served with the United States Navy in World War II.
Emmett was an active member at St. Pius X Catholic Church.
He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved watching his Chicago Cubs play baseball and solving crossword puzzles.
He is survived by his children, Steven (Sue) Friedman of Fort Atkinson, Wis., Charles (Mary Kay) Friedman of Cedar Rapids, Ann (Larry) DeGroodt of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Douglas (Denise) Friedman of Geneva, Ill., Jeffrey (Laura) Friedman of Mount Vernon, Jean Philipp of Swansea, Ill., and June (James) Tipton of Springville; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and his brothers, John (Carol) Friedman of Bankston and Harlan Friedman of Dubuque.
Emmett was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Germaine; son, Donald; son-in-law, Brian; his great-granddaughter, Grace; and two sisters, Jeanette Gassman and Marie Bockenstedt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
