Kubalek, Gladys Helen

Gladys Helen Kubalek, 89, of 101 26th Ave. Dr. SW, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, St. Patrick Catholic Church, by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: St. John Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Tuesday after 9 a.m. at the church. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.

Gladys is survived by the David Heideman family; Shannon (Rick) Bunker family; Marie Hightower, Kim Minor, Judy Morris, Sara Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Bunker; and many other special friends.

Gladys is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie.

Gladys was born January 1, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Charles and Agnes Hynek. She married Charles Kubalek on Feb. 20, 1954, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. She was an insurance agent and owned and operated Hynek Insurance Company until her retirement.

Gladys was strong-willed and very independent. She was licensed as a private pilot, loved to travel, and enjoyed painting, knitting, visits to the casinos, and growing fruit trees in her yard.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Witwer Senior Center or the Salvation Army.
