Wayne A. Syring, 84, of Clarence, died Thursday, May 5, 2016, at home. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Monday, May 9, at St. John's United Church of Christ, by Pastor Tommi Boeder. Burial: Clarence Cemetery with military rites. Visitation: 9:30 a.m. to service time at the church.
Born Oct. 13, 1931, in Bennett, Iowa, Wayne was the son of Fred and Martha (Edler) Syring. He married Carol Rorick on Aug. 3, 1951, in Tipton. Wayne graduated from Bennett High School and served in the Army from January 1951 until January 1954. While in Korea he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He worked for Jack's Feed in Stanwood for 13 years before buying in with Elwood Hasenbank of Clarence in 1968. He bought out Elwood in 1980 and retired in 1996.
Wayne was a former member of Stanwood Fire Department, Stanwood Legion and served on the Stanwood town council for eight years. After moving to Clarence, he became a member of Clarence Fire Department and was a volunteer driver for Clarence Ambulance. He was a member of the Clarence Legion, receiving his 60-year legion pin in 2005.
As a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Clarence, he served on the church council, cemetery board and endowment fund. Wayne was an avid sheepshead player and went on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; sons, Al (Marcia) and K.C. (Jill) of Clarence; daughter, Karen (Cliff) Klouda of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sister, Shirley Woolison of Davenport.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, LaVern; and sisters, Helen Ross and Dorothy Grage.
