Duffield, Garnet JANICE
Garnet JANICE Duffield, 75, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, after a courageous attempt of rehabilitation following cardiac surgery.
Janice was born the oldest daughter of Ernest and Irene Wimer Heggs on July 23, 1934, in Kellerton, Iowa. She graduated from Kellerton High School and attended Simpson College. On Sept. 27, 1953, she married her childhood sweetheart, Denny Duffield, and accompanied him to San Diego, Calif., to begin their married life. Janice was a career woman, known as a “self-managed employee,” and retired from the real estate services business.
Janice was raised a Christian and was a member of the Kellerton Christian Church. She also was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Alpha Lambda Master Chapter for 41 years.
Janice is survived by her husband, Denny; her children, Debra (John) Quinnell of West Des Moines, Curtis (Anne) Duffield and LeAnn (Thomas) Neel, both of Cedar Rapids; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Melissa Chaplin, Daniel and Jodi Quinnell, Jolene Duffield and Leo Johnson, Amy and Ryan Tierney (Tait and Truman), Beau Duffield and Katie Schropp (Dillon), Cody Duffield, Rafferty Neel and Jeffrey Allyn (Liam); stepgreat-grandchildren, Sam, Chloe and Noah Allyn; sister, Shirley (Myron) Ingram; brother, Allan (Janetta) Heggs; sister-in-law, Doris Gibson; and brother-in-law, Tom (Joyce) Duffield.
Janice had many other family members and friends whom she always greeted with her beautiful smile. She had a loving acceptance of people and touched many lives with her kindness and generous heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and recently by her oldest granddaughter, Mary Quinnell Allyn, in June 2009.
Memorial services: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where the family will greet friends one hour before service time. The Rev. Del Bear will officiate.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Alpha Lambda Master Chapter. A charity will be designated by her sorority.
